Sampling saliva has obvious advantages over sampling serum 1 ; . However, metabolic transformation of steroid hormones by the salivary glands and the transit of testosterone bound to albumin from the circulation into the saliva are problems for understanding the role of these assays in future investigations of endocrine function 2 ; . Although recent studies have shown a good correlation between salivary testosterone and free testosterone in plasma as determined by an equilibriurn dialysis method, there is not good agreement as to the relationships between percentage of total testosterone in serum, free testosterone in serum, and salivary testosterone 3 ; . We measured free testosterone in serum with a "DPC" RIA kit Diagnostics Products Corp., Los Angeles, CA 90045 ; in which a tracer is used that does not bind to transport proteins for steroid hormones. We also measured total serum and salivary testosterone with an ifiA kit Farmos Diagnostica, 90460 Oulunsalo, Finland ; and compared the results. We observed a highly significant correlation r 0.93 ; between values for free and total testosterone in serum in a group of 41 normal men and women. Mechanical ventilation in children Appreciation of the therapeutics of mechanical ventilation requires an implicit understanding of the respiratory physiology and ICU technology. Despite the variety of ventilators and ventilation technology the fundamental physical chemistry and physiology of oxygen and carbon dioxide are unchanged, so at one level one can still expect the novice to handle all devices appropriately. Once the patient is attached to the ventilator, adequacy of ventilation is immediately assessed clinically through observation of chest movement, colour, perfusion and auscultation of the chest.
