Blood, and accuracy over a range of viscosity of at least 0.69 to 23 cP. In addition, it showed good precision, required only 0.2- to 0.45-mL samples, and could be adapted to use disposable probes and cuvettes for contaminated specimens while maintaining acceptable precision. With this instrument, the measurements were most accurate and precise at a single sensitivity setting. The calibration curves shifted slightly when the sensitivity setting was changed. In previous studies capillary tube or Ostwald viscometers were used to measure the viscosity of serum or plasma. Ostwald viscometers have several drawbacks, including a sample volume requirement of at least 5 mL, slow operation, and difficulty with temperature calibration 3, 4 ; . An automated capifiary viscometer has been developed that mitigates some of these problems, but it cannot be used for whole-blood or serum specimens because microaggregates can occlude the flow through the capifiary tube 3 ; . The range for plasma viscosity in our study was similar to the values published for the automated capillary visoometer. Our mean viscosity is somewhat lower, owing to the higher temperature we used 37 vs 25# C ; . Whole-blood viscosity has typically been measured with a dynamic viscometer such as the cylinder-in-cylinder type or the more common cone-plate devices 2, 6, 7 ; . Compared to the Sonoclot Coagulation Analyzer, other dynamic viscometers have slower test turn-around times, require larger sample volumes, and require repeated cleaning and decontsminstion of their fixed-sample-volume chambers. The range of normal plasma viscosity in our study was similar to ranges found with cone-plate viscometers operated at shear rates of about 100 to 200 s'. The exponential relationship we found between viscosity and hematocrit agreed well with previous studies 8 ; . In summary, we found this instrument to be well suited for clinical measurements of whole blood and plasma viscosity, with distinct advantages in speed, simplicity of operation, and handling of contaminated specimens.

Cerebral vasospasm remains a significant cause of mortality and morbidity after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. Use of either intra-arterial or intracisternal papaverine as an alternative treatment of refractory cerebral vasospasm has been associated with various complications including haemodynamic instabilities. However, our search in literature did not reveal association of bradycardia and hypotension with the use of papaverine by either of these routes. Here, we describe a case of anterior communicating artery aneurysm with hydrocephalus. The patient underwent craniotomy and clipping of the aneurysm followed by third ventriculostomy. Instillation of papaverine at the surgical site caused significant haemodynamic changes possibly because of stimulation of hypothalamus in the third ventricle or vagal nuclei in the fourth ventricle, or even both. We recommend cautious use of intracisternal papaverine in such scenario especially when third ventriculostomy has been performed as an adjunct surgical procedure.
