Using the well-studied group of patients from the Queen Square cohort who fifteen years ago presented with isolated syndromes suggestive of MS who underwent MRI, Brex and co-workers have studied the progression of the lesions and determined their predictive value. In this group of patients n 71 ; 88% of those with abnormal MRI scans developed MS whilst only 19% of those with a normal scan developed MS. In the earlier years the lesion load number and extent of lesions ; correlated with prognosis and this correlation continues at 14 years!
So far, application of fertilizer to mitigate problems of nutrient-limited yields in farmers' fields in the Highlands of Ethiopia has been based on conventional blanket fertilizer recommendations, without taking into account indigenous soil nutrient supply. Moreover, though in some soil fertility studies, indigenous nutrient availability is considered, different nutrients are treated separately and fertilizer recommendations are usually based on the most limiting nutrient, ignoring the interactive effects among nutrients. In this study, the QUEFTS QUantitative Evaluation of the Fertility of Tropical Soils ; model, that takes into account indigenous soil nutrient supply, internal nutrient use efficiency at maximum nutrient accumulation and dilution, actual uptake and recovery fractions of applied fertilizers, has been parameterized and calibrated for barley in the Northern Highlands of Ethiopia. For parameterization and calibration, we carried out factorial field experiments with application rates of N 0, 25 and 50 kg ha1 ; , P 0, 25, 50 and 75 kg ha-1 ; and K 0, 25 and 50 kg ha-1 ; in three replicates in four fields. The constants for maximum accumulation and dilution, kg grain kg-1 N 34 and 52 ; , P 182 and 365 ; , and K 44 and 127 ; , coefficients for estimation of potential supply of N, P and K, respectively, q 6.0, r 0.55, and s 166, and maximum recovery fractions 0.5, 0.2 and 1.0, respectively for N, P and K were estimated as standard parameters for the QUEFTS model and then applied to calculate balanced rates of fertilizer for barley in the Northern Highlands of Ethiopia on the basis of soil OC content, exchangeable K, and P-Olsen.

Patency, which is the length of time oocysts are shed in the feces, generally lasts 6-18 days 4-10 days of diarrhoea ; in immunocompetent individuals but may be prolonged in immunosuppressed patients. Some individuals shed oocysts but appear asymptomatic Fayer and Ungar, 1986 ; . Cryptosporidiosis is the most common protozoan intestinal parasite isolated worldwide in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised humans and has been reported from 3 days to 95 years old. It is responsible for both epidemic as well as endemic levels of intestinal disease Rose, 1997 ; . Infection is most frequently spread by direct person-toperson- transmission through the feacal oral route or by sputum and vomits and zoonoticaly from cattle and sheep. Indirectly it is spread through the environment particularly through water Hojlyng et al., 1987.

This agreement brings the total number of products formulated with CAPTISOL under current license partners to nine. "We are excited that Teva has selected CAPTISOL as a drug delivery vehicle to enable the development of its innovative therapy for patients suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, " said Edward W. Mehrer, president and CEO of CyDex. "Teva's scientific capabilities and market presence as a global company based in Israel make them an outstanding partner for CyDex." In the agreement, CyDex granted Teva global rights for use of CAPTISOL in a formulation of TV-4710, a peptide based on the sequence of CDR1 of an anti-DNA antibody". Based on research of the team of Prof. Edna Mozes at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, this compound represents a novel approach toward modulation of the autoimmune processes in SLE, a disease with a high level of morbidity and significant mortality. Preclinical studies of TV4710 indicate promise in preventing and treating SLE-like symptoms and nettle.
1 Neomycin is a colorless antibiotic produced by certain strains of Streptomyces fradiae. The antibiotic is a polybasic, water-soluble substance. The neomycin complex consists of two isomeric substances, now recognized as neomycin B and neomycin C. Commercial neomycin is composed mainly of neomycin B and is usually in the form of a sulfate, a white amorphous powder. 2 An A fraction was at first also described, but it was later found to be a degradation product. Neomycin is active against a great variety of Grampositive cocci and rods, Gram-negative rods, and acid-fast bacteria, notably the tuberculosis organism. It is not active against anaerobic bacteria, fungi, most protozoa, rickettsiae, and viruses. 3 Development of resistance to neomycin is slower than that to streptomycin. For subcutaneous injection of neomycin sulfate in mice, the LD50 or dosage at which 50% of the animals died was 165250 mg kg. The LD50 for intraperitoneal administration is about the same. Intravenously, neomycin is about five times as toxic. Orally, the LD50 is greater than 2800 mg kg.

Transduction of Human TILs. Human TILs from six patients with melanoma were prepared as described 1, 2 ; . Early cultures of TILs were transduced by exposing them to culture supernatant from the packaging cell line PA317 that produced N2 containing virions 5, 7, 8 ; . The titer of the virus ranged from 2 to 10 105 colony-forming units ml and the producer line expressed high levels of neomycin phosphotransferase NPT ; . The cells were cultured with the viral supernatant in the presence of protamine sulfate 5 , ug ml ; for 2 hr at 370C. The transduced cells were selected for the NeoR gene expression by exposure to the neomycin analog G418 300-400 , ug ml of active drug ; for 10-15 days beginning 2 days after infection. The resistant TIL populations were expanded from five patients; TIL cultures from patient number 2 could not be analyzed because of contamination problems. The supernatants from the transduced TIL lines contained no infectious virus as assessed by S'L- assay. DNA and RNA Analyses. Restriction enzyme-digested DNA 15 , ug per lane ; was electrophoresed in 0.8% agarose, and the separated fragments were transferred to nitrocellulose membranes and hybridized overnight at 420C with 32plabeled probes specific activity, 108 dpm , ug ; in 6x SSC 10% dextran sulfate 50 mM Tris HCl, pH 7.5 1 mM EDTA containing denatured salmon sperm DNA at 100 , tg ml 1x SSC 0.15 M NaCl 15 mM sodium citrate, pH 7 ; . Blots were washed three times in 1 x SSC for 90 min, followed by a high stringency wash in 0.1x SSC at 550C for 30 min. Autoradiography was carried out at -70'C using Kodak XAR-5 films.

Diet by addition of urea. Heifers were individually fed in Calan electronic gates for ad libitum consumption of a 58% ground corn cobs and 12% sorghum silage diet. The remaining 30% of the diet was DDG replaced with the appropriate amount of urea. Urine was collected from each heifer for 5 consecutive d and assayed for allantoin and creatinine concentrations. Ratio of allantoin to creatinine A: C ; was assumed indicative of microbial crude protein production. In Exp. 2, 48 crossbred heifers 205 20 kg ; were stratified by weight then assigned randomly to one of eight pens. Pens were then assigned randomly to supplement treatments. Heifers were fed for ad libitum consumption of grass hay 54% TDN, 7.4% CP ; and supplemented daily with either 1.4 kg DDG heifer or 1.4 kg DDG plus 45g urea heifer. This was the amount of urea required to meet the 1996 NRC predicted DIP requirement. Urine was collected from each heifer for 3 consecutive d, composited by animal, and analyzed as described for Exp. 1. In Exp. 1, heifer ADG P 0.77 ; , DMI P 0.95 ; , G: F P 0.54 ; , and A: C ratio P 0.84 ; were similar among treatments. Likewise, in Exp. 2, heifer ADG P 0.17 ; , DMI P 0.76 ; , G: F P 0.33 ; , and A: C ratio P .98 ; were similar between treatments. We attribute the lack of differences in both experiments to recycling of endogenous urea and interpret these results to indicate that supplemental DIP is not necessary when DDG are fed in excess of the MP requirement in forage based diets.
