It's a dichotomy that demonstrates just how incomplete the science of nutrition still is. On the one hand, a `wealth of research' points to health benefits of vitamin C, a vitamin popular with health-conscious consumers and present in hundreds of food products. But a new study has thrown up a `disturbing surprise' - vitamin C might actually harm us by speeding up hardening of the arteries. Epidemiologist James Dwyer and colleagues from the University of Southern California studied 573 outwardly healthy middle-aged men and women and found that those taking 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily for at least a year had a 2 1 times greater rate of thickening of the arteries than did those who avoided supplements. The rate was five times greater among smokers. And while the researchers found no clear signs that getting lots of vitamin C from food or a daily multivitamin is harmful, subjects taking vitamin C pills had accelerated thickening of the walls of the big arteries in their necks, which grew faster the more vitamin C they took. And yet just a short time ago, researchers found that long term supplementation of 500 milligrams of vitamin C per day can significantly reduce high blood pressure in hypertensive patients. "We believe this is a significant finding that may be of considerable value to patients who have moderately elevated blood pressure, " said Balz Frei, professor and director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and co-author of the study. "Working with their doctors, it may provide a way to bring their blood pressure back within acceptable levels without the cost or possible side effects of prescription drugs." Frei and his fellow researchers said that 500 milligrams per day would be without any side effects, very inexpensive as a dietary supplement, and could yield blood pressure reductions comparable to those of some prescription drugs used to reduce hypertension. The vitamin C intake might also produce other health benefits as well, Frei said, especially if it was at least partially obtained by eating an improved diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Frei has attacked the latest study, saying it's contrary to a wealth of other research on this topic and may erroneously lead people to believe this valuable antioxidant is a health risk. "This report will cause unnecessary and unjustified confusion and fear among the public, " Frei said. The report did not put its findings in the proper context of hundreds of existing studies demonstrating the health benefits of vitamin C, he said - including related studies in which Frei and other scientists found that moderate daily supplements of vitamin C 500mg ; could improve the "relaxation" state of blood vessels and thereby help prevent the chest pains of unstable angina pectoris and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
