Methods: We investigated 14 isolates obtained from nasopharyngeal swabs and urine from patients with a serologically confirmed RV infection. The isolates were derived from samples collected between 2004 and 2005 in Minsk. To determine the genotype, sequence data from the gene coding for the E1 surface protein was used. Results: Analysis of the complete E1 gene revealed a high maximum diversity of more than 6 % between the new isolates. 27 specific mutations, nearly 90 % of which remained silent, were found. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequences revealed a segregation into three distinct lineages. One group of isolates was assigned to genotype 1E, whereas the other two grouped with a strain belonging to the provisional genotype 1g. Detailed analysis of the genetic distances showed that the cluster of 1g strains contains 4 subgroups, at least one of which might represent a putative new provisional genotype of clade 1. Conclusions Discussion: This study examined for the first time wild-type rubella viruses from Belarus on a molecular level and detected co-circulation of strains belonging to three different lineages. Our findings suggested that RV is still endemic in Belarus and that new strains cannot always be easily assigned to current genotypes and enfuvirtide.

Hinzen Erdbebenstation Bensberg, University of Cologne holger.gaensicke uni-koeln The task of the Eifel Plume project is to determine the existence of an assumed mantle plume responsible for the Tertiary and Quaternary volcanism in the Eifel region of midwest Germany. During a large passive and semi-active seismological experiment November 1997 - June 1998 ; about 160 mobil broadband and short period seismic stations were operated in addition to the ca. 100 permanent stations in the area of interest. The permanent measuring stations registered teleseismic and local events. Local events are used to obtain a threedimensional tomographic model of seismic velocities in the crust. In addition to travel time corrections for the teleseismic investigations of the plume, the 3D velocity model should improve the precision for locations of local events. Among the 113 local events, 33 were identified as tectonic earthquakes. The other events were either quarry blasts or shallow mine-induced seismic events. The firing time of 31 quarry blasts was measured during the field period. Since the origin time and the location of these events are known with high precision, they can be used to validate inverted velocity models for the region. A strong azimuthal dependency of travel time residuals resulting from a 1D velocity model was found for quarry blasts with hypocenters in the volcanic field in the center of the Eifel. Seismic tomography of the crust requires a large set of crustal travel paths. To increase the number of observations, seismograms of local events recorded during the last two years by permanent stations were added to the Eifel plume data set. Solutions of the inverse problem for 3D local earthquake tomography are obtained by linearization with respect to a 1D velocity model. Since the determination of the minimum 1D model used as a starting model for the 3D model may lead to biguous results, some a priori information have to be included. We present preliminary results obtained by simultanous inversion of earthquake and velocity parameters constrained by known geological parameters and the controlled source information from calibrated quarry blasts.
