In summary, the decrease in IFP and stromal angiopoietin-2 levels, and increased coverage of the vasculature by pericytes provides further support for the hypothesis that VEGF blockade "normalizes" the tumor vasculature and enhances tumor drug delivery. The increase in tumor cell proliferation is also an indirect indication of tumor vascular "normalization", and tumor cell apoptosis may represent another mechanism by which BV enhances the effects of chemotherapy and radiation. The high-dose-BV combined with chemoradiation, induced doselimiting toxicity in some patients. Therefore, the MTD of BV combined with radiochemotherapy is 5 mg kg.
