The focus of this discussion paper is probiotics which have been defined as live microorganisms that when ingested in appropriate quantities, have a beneficial effect in the prevention and treatment of specific medical conditions by improving the host's intestinal microbial balance1. The Natural Health Products NHP ; Regulations define a probiotic as a monoculture or mixedculture of live micro-organisms that benefit the microbiota indigenous to humans2. A probiotic is limited to non-pathogenic microorganisms. An extensive internet search was conducted and thirty interviews were initiated with researchers across Canada. The results of eight are summarized in this report as is information taken from internet searches of individual researcher profiles. It was often difficult to determine from website information whether the research involved a focus on Natural Health Products NHP ; and or functional foods. Attempts to clarify this through contact with the individual researchers by email and telephone interviewing were for the most part unsuccessful.
Spending long hours on teleconferences and in front of a computer screen does have its rewards. For Bruce Ritchie, it is a committee that allows him to make a difference. Bill Mindell feels the same. "It is one of the most rewarding things I do. It is intellectually stimulating. I get to work with a great group of people and I know my participation makes a difference in people's lives. When I speak on behalf of the BSSC to other groups, they listen carefully. It's very gratifying to look at many of the positive changes that have happened in the blood system over the

Plasmid Construction--PCBER Pt1 was cloned into the overexpression plasmid pSBETa 29 ; as previously described 4 ; , and PLR Tp1 was cloned into the same vector in a similar manner. Purification of PLR Tp1 and PCBER Pt1--Expression of both PLR Tp1 and PCBER Pt1 in Escherichia coli B834-DE3 ; was individually induced by addition of isopropyl D-thiogalactopyranoside to a 1 mM final concentration at mid-log phase A600 0.5 0.7 ; . Following induction the two cell lines were allowed to grow for 21 h at for PLR Tp1 and 10 h at for PCBER Pt1, respectively, with shaking at 250 rpm. The cells for each were then harvested by centrifugation 3, 000 g ; , after which the individual pellets were frozen 2 h ; to facilitate cell lysis. The pellets containing PLR Tp1 and PCBER Pt1 were each thawed at room temperature, then individually suspended in Buffer A 20 mM Bis-Tris-propane, pH 8.0, containing 2 mM EDTA, 1 mM phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, and 5 mM dithiothreitol ; , and sonicated three times for 30 s ; , with the resulting suspensions centrifuged 20, 000 g ; . The supernatant from the PLR Tp1- and PCBER Pt1containing cell lines were next subjected to ammonium sulfate precipitation, with the proteins precipitating between 40 and 70% ammonium sulfate reconstituted in buffer A, followed by a desalting step over and cogentin.

The COPD-X guidelines These guidelines are the outcome of a joint project of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian Lung Foundation. The guidelines aim to: effect changes in clinical practice based on sound evidence; and shift the emphasis from a predominant reliance on pharmacological treatment of COPD to a range of interventions which include patient education, self-management of exacerbations and pulmonary rehabilitation. These guidelines deal mainly with the management of established disease and exacerbations. However, this is only one element of the COPD Strategy of the Australian Lung Foundation, which has the long-term goals of: primary prevention of smoking; improving rates of smoking cessation; early detection of airflow limitation in smokers before disablement; and improved management of stable disease and prevention of exacerbations and cognex.

Patient 1 A 54-year-old woman was admitted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on 18 December 1996 with liver failure. Eight months before admission, she had begun therapy with nefazodone, 100 mg orally twice daily, for depression and clorazepate Tranxene, Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Illinois ; for anxiety. She first noticed fatigue and intermittent nausea approximately 6 weeks before admission. She was seen by her family physician at that time, who noticed jaundice and discontinued both clorazepate and nefazodone therapies. The jaundice persisted, and 6 weeks later, she developed confusion. At that point, she was admitted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for consideration of liver transplantation. Her medical history included depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism, and hypertension. She reported no suicidal ideation; exposure to toxic substances, viral hepatitis, or blood products; intravenous drug use; getting a tattoo; alcohol use; or history of liver disease. Her only medication, in addition to nefazodone and clorazepate, was levothyroxine Synthroid, Knoll Pharmaceuticals, Mount Olive, New Jersey ; , which she had been taking for several years. On admission, the patient had jaundice and as and colace.
Jeremy attended the "Pre-Season Spring Thaw Event" March 5th in Truro, through snow, sleet and sun. It was a score "O" for fun, but Jeremy forgot to ask that detail before leaving on his journey. He did the intermediate course with 13 controls throughout Victoria Park. Unfortunately Jeremy did all controls in order, running back and forth through out the park. He was the last one to return. It took him 129 minutes to complete, and it was only supposed to be a 5km course. Tired, wet and cold, Jeremy was the only participant to get all 13 controls! He placed first! A great time was had by all. Pictured is Michael Price Meet Director ; and Jeremy. Ke lli.
