Away .There was no limit to the time the patient was treated as an inpatient! What a contrast from present hospital! ; . Medicine, surgery, fevers and eye diseases had separate wards. It had its own pharmacy, library and lecture halls. It had a mosque for Muslim patients as well a chapel for Christian patients!. The hospital and medical school at Damascus had elegant rooms and an extensive library. Healthy people are said to have feigned illness in order to enjoy its cuisine. There was a separate hospital in Damascus for lepers, while, in Europe, even six centuries later, condemned lepers were burned to death by royal decree. The Qayrawan Hospital built in 830 A.D. in Tunisia ; was characterized by spacious separate wards, waiting rooms for visitors and patients, and female nurses from Sudan, an event representing the first use of nursing in Arabic history. The hospital also provided facilities for performing prayers. Universities, cities and hospitals acquired large libraries Mustansiriyya University in Baghdad contained 80, 000 volumes; the library of Cordova 600, 000 volumes; that of Cairo 2, 000, 000 and that of Tripoli 3, 000, 000 books ; , physicians had their own extensive personal book collections, at a time when printing was unknown and book editing was done by skilled and specialized scribes putting in long hours of manual labour. For the first time in history, these hospitals kept records of patients and their medical care. As to the salaries of Physicians here is some information. The annual income of Jibrail ibn Bakitshu who was the Chief of Staff at a Baghdad hospital in 833AD as recorded by his own secretary was 4.9 million dirhams. His son also a doctor lived in a house in Baghdad that was air-conditioned by ice in summer and heated by charcoal in winter!. A resident by comparison, who was supposed to be on duty for two days and two nights a week, was paid 300 dirhams a month.

Some of the studies have shown that, prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in men older than 50 yr is 4%-6% and 33%-47% respectively, which is in concordance with our study 11, 12 ; . Daily calcium and vitamin D intake only provide 60% and 15% of what is recommended, respectively. Up to age of 40, calcium intake has an effect on bone mass changes but in older ages, it has no independent correlation with bone mass. Effectiveness of calcium intake in older ages is controversial. Some studies have shown that in males, calcium intake up to 1200 mg day ; has no effect on bone loss pattern. In other studies, it has been reported that calcium intake in older ages did not change bone mineral density significantly 13 ; . Similar results have been reported about vitamin D. It should be mentioned that vitamin D intake was inadequate and this make analysis difficult. Significant difference was found between osteoporotic and non osteoporotic cases in sunlight.

Oxidation reactions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide H2O2 ; , although the activity is not as great as that of peroxidase 13 ; . The accumulated biochemical and biophysical data allow us to utilize Mb as a heme enzyme model system, and various myoglobin mutants have been constructed to elucidate structure-function relationship on the activation of peroxides 35 ; . For example, F43H H64L Mb, one of the distal histidine relocation mutants, exhibits the enhanced reactivity with H2O2 and the longer lifetime of an active intermediate, a ferryl porphyrin radical cation O FeIVporphyrin ; 6 ; . Therefore as the results, the F43H H64L mutant is able to catalyze the sulfoxidation and epoxidation reaction at the rate comparable with the values of peroxidases. On the other hand, cytochromes P-450 P-450 ; catalyze the hydroxylation of a wide variety of substrates, including hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic molecules 7, 8 ; . The variance in reactivity of Mb and P-450 could arise from differences in the active site structure and the arrangement of functional amino acid residues. The crystal structure of P-450cam with d-camphor reveals that the substrate is tightly bound in the hydrophobic heme pocket through hydrogen bonding interaction with the hydroxyl group of Tyr-96 and the carbonyl oxygen of dcamphor Fig. 1A ; 9 ; . The distance between the heme iron and C5 of d-camphor, the hydroxylation site, is 4.2 . On the contrary, the active site of myoglobin is exposed to the exterior and does not provide any specific interactions for accommodating a foreign substrate with high affinity 10 ; . Therefore, it will be difficult for a ferryl porphyrin radical cation of Mb to hydroxylate a substrate molecule, which is not bound in an appropriate position nearby the heme. We hypothesize that a ferryl oxygen atom transfer to aliphatic or aromatic molecules by Mb mutants might be possible even without a proximal thiolate ligand if the substrates were fixed nearby the heme iron. The F43W H64L Mb mutant, which was previously constructed to investigate effects of an electron-rich tryptophan residue on the peroxygenase activity, appears to be a good model for examining the hypothesis, because aromatic carbon atoms of tryptophan are fixed in the heme vicinity Fig. 1B ; 12 ; . Although the crystal structure of the F43W H64L Mb is not available at the moment, the calculated model structure suggests that the distances of FeC7 and FeC6 are 4.9 and 5.5 , respectively. A calculated structure of F43W H64L Mb was obtained by using the Insight II molecular modeling program Biosym MSI, San Diego, CA ; . The Trp-43 in the mutant is generated by replacing His-43 of the F43H H64L Mb 6 ; with a tryptophan residue and minimizing the energy of the heme pocket. ; The predicted values are similar to the distance between C5 of d-camphor and iron in P-450cam. Our earlier studies provided preliminary evidence that Trp-43 in F43W H64L Mb was oxidatively modified in the reaction with mchloroperbenzoic acid mCPBA however, the exact structure of the modified product s ; remains to be elucidated 12 ; . The subject of this study is to identify the oxidized tryptophan residue to determine whether or not the F43W H64L Mb mutant is capable of performing the oxidation of aromatic molecules and chlorambucil.

One reason why Sue, Amanda and others may have done so well is because they were among the first patients to be given a new type of stem cell which specifically targets the central nervous system. Dr Catherine Orridge, ACT's medical consultant, says: "Our new protocol is to use proregenerative stem cells that work specifically for the central nervous system. Since we've been doing this we've noticed earlier and accelerated outcomes.

Acrylic splint for multiple loose teeth. The following loose permanent teeth FDI notation ; were present: 15, 14, 12, On removal of acrylic splint for oral prophylaxis, the mandibular central incisors exfoliated spontaneously. The orthopantograph showed unerupted all second molars and maxillary canines. There was rapid loss of alveolar attachment and the affected teeth lacked osseous support. The alveolar bone around the mobile teeth was devoid of definable lamina dura and showed indurated periodontal membrane pockets. An extensive alveolar bone loss was noted, giving the teeth a "floating-in-air" appearance Fig. 2 ; . Other systemic examination, routine laboratory investigations, Xray films for skull and chest were normal. The acute inflammation improved to some extent with peridontal cleaning and antibiotic therapy. However, the patient did not turn up for further follow up. Discussion It is generally accepted that PLS is a and chlorothiazide.

Empire State Development ESD ; has developed a variety of incentives designed to meet the changing needs of emerging growth companies in New York State and target the biotechnology and life sciences industry. Biotechnology Industry Growth Fund -- As of 2000-01, New York State's Budget provided million in new funding for biotechnology development at research and manufacturing facilities, including support for the construction and business capital for small and start-up biotech companies to commercialize innovations that emerge from the laboratory. The Fund money was apportioned to ESD million ; for business assistance and to NYSTAR million ; for research and universities. Biotechnology Investment Refundable Tax Credit -- Effective 1 2001, this measure expanded the ITC to biotech companies, thereby fostering the growth of these companies and stimulating job creation. As of 1 99, two new credits became available for emerging technology companies, as part of the Emerging Industries Jobs Act: Qualified Emerging Technology Employment Credit -- A credit of , 000 per new full-time employee employees in excess of 100% of base year employment level ; , available for one three-year period the year the credit is first claimed and in each of the next two years ; provided minimum employment levels are maintained. Unused credits can be carried forward indefinitely; new businesses NY taxpayers for less than six years or eight years if business is subject to Federal regulatory approval ; can take a refund of unused credits. Qualified Emerging Technology Company Capital Tax Credit -- A taxpayer is allowed a credit equal to a percentage of each qualified investment in a qualified emerging technology company and certified by the Commissioner of Taxation and Finance as follows: 10% of qualified investments, provided the taxpayer certifies that the qualified investment will not be sold, transferred, traded, or disposed of during the four years following the year in which the credit is first claimed; or 20% of qualified investments, provided the taxpayer certifies that the qualified investment will not be sold, transferred, traded, or disposed of during the nine years following the year in which the credit is first claimed. High-Tech Revolving Loan Fund --The Rochester Economic Development Corporation's REDCO ; High-Tech Revolving Loan Fund's objective is to assist with job creation or retention in the city by providing low interest loans to technology companies. Loan amounts will not exceed 0, 000. It is well known that the surface chemistry of solid has a great influence on their exchange properties. On the other hand, bio solids have non negligible amounts of ashes. A simple washing or acidic treatment could change significantly their chemical composition and consequently their adsorption behavior, especially in our case where wood was heat treated at low pressure. It should be added, that our post treatments could affect significantly the charcoal constitution and for example leading to some residual lignin or hemicellulose dissolution. The evolutions of pH and electric conductivity of the post treated charcoal samples are reported in figures 1 and 2. We can note that the pH of the suspensions of the samples CHRS ; and CHRE ; , increases with time and become constant after 210 min. comparatively, the starting charcoal CHRB ; reaches a higher pH. The pH change is not significant for the CHRA sample 5.3 to 6.02 ; , and after one hour becomes approximately constant. In the same way, for CHRB ; , CHRS ; and CHRE ; clear increases in the electric conductivity of the medium are observed. The increases are less significant for CHRS ; and CHRE ; compared with those of CHRB ; . Indeed, the washing of charcoal with NaOH or water involves an elimination of a portion of the metals present in the charcoal. When CHRB ; is washed with HCl 1N CHRA ; , the elimination of metal ions is almost total, since the contact of this sample with distilled water does not involve any modification of the solution conductivity. To sum up, it seems demonstrated that a washing by HCl 1N leads in our conditions to a quasi total removal of ionic species from the surface of our samples. The results obtained for the analysis of the surface functional groups are summarised in table 1 ; . According to the Boehm method the surface functions are classified into four groups: Group I acidic and chlorambucil.
