In general, the study groups present a health pattern that is clearly a result of the EDNT occurring in the rural areas of Brazil. However, even considering the strong effects of seasonal variation on these populations' body habitus, floodplain groups tend to present slightly better overall health than communities residing in black water ecosystems which, in turn, seem better off than some of the Native American populations reported in the literature. These results point to a combination of political, economic, ecological and lifestyle incongruity stressors as playing major roles in the determination of the health quality of life status of these peasant populations. One of the major challenges for Brazil in this new millennium is to promote sustainable, equitable development, taking into account both human groups and the natural environment. The situation of the study populations indicates that much is still to be done.
